The Usapho Indlu holiday club ran for three weeks during the June/July school holidays. The theme this year was ‘Never Alone’ and 42 attendees from our 27 households took part in this daily program.
The ‘Never Alone’ theme was broken down into sub-themes that taught the children that God loves them and is always with them. The youngsters were also made aware that they are surrounded by people who love and care for them and who have been sent by God.
The theme was presented through ice breakers, activities, games and also Bible stories that referenced actual people who went through challenges like anxiety and depression. The first week was mainly focused on the high schoolers since all the primary school children attended the first week of their holiday club at the George Methodist Church.
Natalie Mentoor visited on four occasions and taught the children about the spiritual gifts that each Christian is given by the Holy Spirit. There were also games and activities that guided the children to discover their personal spiritual gifts. They were also educated regarding behaviors that could put them at risk and also how to interact with different kinds of people/strangers.
During the holiday club there were also different outings including to the Museum, which the children enjoyed very much as they learnt some of the history of George. The high school learners also visited the George Library and were introduced to the different areas of the library and how this can assist them in their education. An added blessing included lunch at McDonalds.
The gardening program also received attention during the ‘food garden day’ when the youngsters watered the plants, mixed some compost and did some cleaning. They felt that it was a refreshing experience to be outside with nature.
Khezi Soldaat, Usapho Indlu’s field worker, and four of the youth attended a full day of training, led by Scripture Union, which equipped them to run the winter holiday club effectively. The leaders of the Club are grateful to everybody who worked hard to make it a success: Tannie Sally for making sure they had all the stationery they needed, the prizes and the sweet treats; Nezzy, who made sure that the children had their lunch to eat on time each and every day; and a very special thanks to Tannie Natalie for everything she taught the children, the fun and laughter shared, and for giving of her time.
