Workshop: Building a Worm Farm in your Food Garden 

As part of our expansion in our food gardens, we are so grateful to have had four worm farms donated to Usapho Indlu. This has given us the opportunity to set up our own worm farm.  

Corne van Eck taught the staff, volunteers, learners and teachers how to establish and care for worms as a very valuable source of organic food for our vegetables.  The worms are fed kitchen waste such as vegetable and fruit peels, tea bags and seeds. We are able to harvest pure ‘worm tea’ – which we call “garden gold”- as it is such a valuable commodity for gardeners.  

The learners are so interested in this as we teach them about biodiversity in our gardens and the importance of creating a classroom garden where creatures, birds and insects all have a role to play as we learn to grow and harvest our food.
