Gardens take time, patience, daily care and large volumes of compost, fertilizer and water. We commenced with compost-making last winter as this is an essential life skill to be taught to all gardeners.
We have seen such growth in this project, with our families using small corners of their properties to establish flower beds and vegetable gardens. We have used recycled tyres and ecobricks as barriers for the garden beds and filled them to capacity to grow food for their families. Those who have extra are able to sell their produce. Vegetables and herbs are added to the daily meal cooked lovingly by our staff and volunteers and enjoyed by our children at the Education Centre.
During October we raised funds for a 2,200L rain tank which has been installed at Nezzy’s home, enabling us to harvest sufficient water for her garden and the surrounding families who will be able to collect buckets of life-giving precious rainwater for their homegrown crops.
The neighbourhood is changing. There is no trash in the streets, the crops are growing and the fruit trees are starting to bear fruit…a truly beautiful sight bringing so much joy to the community!
