COMMUNITY NEWS – The Usapho Indlu trail run, hosted by the Redberry Farm on Saturday 25 April, took place in perfect weather conditions.
A large group of runners and walkers supported the event and had a great time completing the route in beautiful rural surroundings.
Before the start, the runners were surprised with a short singing performance by the children from Usapho Indlu’s educational centre, who participated in the run. Among them were four learners who are being coached by a local runner and volunteer, Michelle Jansen van Vüren.
It was a fundraising event for Usapho Indlu, a non-profit organisation (NPO), to enable them to buy a second transport vehicle for use in their community development
programme in Zone 7, Thembalethu.
Part of this programme is an educational centre for learners in which they do their homework in the afternoons, receive teaching support from volunteers and learn valuable life skills, such as food gardening.
The NPO’s programme impacts the lives of whole families as personal development is also encouraged among the adults.
Sally Versfeld, the founder and CEO, said transport is a major challenge, and another vehicle would facilitate outings for educational purposes, sport participation and expanding life experiences for the children and adults. It would also enhance building relationships across the broader George community.
“We want to make sure that none of our children are excluded from mapping out that pathway out of poverty and the plan and purpose that God has for them.”
