Winter time in South Africa might be cooler than usual but Usapho Indlu has been as busy as ever.
The community gardens are starting to come alive after winter when much time was spent building compost heaps, working the soil, making new vegetable beds and cultivating seedlings. Food Security and creating household gardens is a priority. This not only puts food on the table but can give families a side hustle income too!
The Usapho Indlu families also received much appreciated prepacked, nutritious meals, known as “Food Sox” from Soft Landings and Garden Route Food Pantry. Our families are blown away with the value and flavours available in these “Food Sox”.
To keep the chilly winter weather at bay, some of our volunteers knitted warm winter clothing that included beanies. The smiles on their childrens’ faces expressed their gratitude beautifully as it was definitely a cold and wet winter in George this year.
In August we also celebrate women’s day in South Africa. As director of Usapho Indlu, Sally Versfeld shared these sentiments on the day towards Siphokazi, Veronica and Nesizwa (from left to right in photo): “I’m so proud of these beautiful women I get to call colleagues and friends! They sacrifice so much to serve their community with love and joy, bringing meaning and transformation to so many others they serve. Thank you!”
