Floods, storms and gale force winds rocked our George community over the past 10 days, leaving a trail of devastation, major damage to infrastructure, transport systems, homes and loss of life.
All neighbourhoods were affected and there was an overwhelming response from many individuals, businesses, churches and more to take action and meet the needs of others no matter their own situation. We were so moved by the donations we received, strangers just arrived at our office and delivered what they could. They knew we were first responders and able to reach the homeless, hungry and those cut off from others.
My heart goes out to our staff who worked 18 hours a day to reach remote homes and families with hot meals and warm clothing and blankets. Sizwe bravely drove the truck and delivered goods through treacherous conditions. There was no electricity, but we were able to use small gas stoves to warm up the meals that were sent through from town. They prayed for families and in a couple of cases, we had to send in our teenage boys wading through water, to deliver to needy families.
The weather has settled and we have begun repairing structures and bringing hope where we can. Thank you George community – and those from afar – who sent financial donations. Our kitchen has re-opened and our programs have re-started!
