As autumn falls in South Africa, the various gardening sites that Usapho Indlu has established, continue to blossom.
Learners at our Education Centre and Delville Park Primary School have enjoyed playing in the leaves that are synonymous with this season but have also put in the work to look after and prepare the gardens for winter…and the spring and summer that will follow.
Young (and not so young) budding garden enthusiasts have continued to build composts heaps with the donations of bags of leaves we have received. Learners like Cody, are proving to be faithful members of our Garden Club… and love to water their crops! And although they might have learnt the saying in English class, when one of the grade 6 learners opened a pea pod, she exclaimed, “Oh, this is where the saying comes from ‘two peas in a pod’!” English with the help of gardening, or is it vice versa, had helped her understand.
This season also saw a very productive visit by Sally and Jonathan to local farmer, Arthur Cocroft, who not only equipped us regarding composting and preparing for planting, but also blessed us with dozens of established Macadamia nut trees.
And in our field director, Nezzy’s home garden in Thembalethu, her plot of land – which was bare four years ago – continues to prove that you don’t need a big property to create food security. And not only can her little plot feed her family of five but its creates extra income as she sells the excess produce.
