ABCD Training

“ABCD builds on the assets that are already found in the community and mobilizes individuals, associations and organizations to come together to build on their assets, not concentrate on their needs”.

This connects so well with Usapho Indlu’s vision to create sustainable households, and helps individuals discover their worth, their abilities and their gifts.

At the end of the day, we are faced with devastating poverty and shocking unemployment figures in Thembalethu.  We see Asset Based Citizen-led Development as a means of helping our adults to help themselves.  To this end, we have brought in a very well-known Community Developer, Anne Timms, to facilitate our workshops and to assist our adults to discover what they can do to create wealth in their homes.

“Can I sell chickens?”, “Could I start a daycare?”, “Should I plant vegetables to provide food for my family and sell the excess?”, “Maybe I can make dough to sell to caterers for events?” These were just some of the questions during our discussion at our recent workshop and whilst we were brainstorming, a shift in thinking occurred.  Hope was fanned into flame because there seemed to be a solution to their desperation, and the solution lay in their own hands.

We look forward to developments over the next few months as we embark on this journey with our precious households.
